During his service from October 2017 to July 2019, primarily in the frontline DMZ unit, Kim maintained regular contact with his partner through phone calls and daily handwritten entries that evolved into personal letters. These writings, totaling around 150, were preserved in diary form and shared in person during his leaves, with his partner often responding in writing directly on the pages.

Excerpts from a letter dated April 6, 2018, reveal intimate expressions such as I think I love you and I’ll probably say you did my military service for me later on, highlighting the depth of his feelings. Lawyer Ko emphasized the stark emotional contrast between these private messages and the more general, polite letters Kim sent to fellow celebrities, including the late Kim Sae-ron, noting that terms of endearment like love were reserved exclusively for his romantic partner.

The legal team clarified that Kim’s letter to the late actress was part of a broader effort to stay connected with peers in the entertainment industry while serving in an isolated environment. Expressions like I miss you were described as common sentiments among soldiers communicating with civilians, reflecting a natural longing for normalcy rather than romantic intent. Additional diary entries from July and August 2018 further underscore his focus on his then-partner, expressing hopes for future travels and gratitude for her patience.

The disclosed materials have been submitted to authorities in their original form without alteration, according to Ko, who described the public release as an unfortunate yet necessary step for restoring Kim’s reputation. A source familiar with the entertainment industry confirmed that Kim’s relationship with actress A, a former agency colleague, was widely known at the time, making simultaneous involvement with another individual highly unlikely.
