평창 동계올림픽대회가 이제 한 달도 채 남지 않았다. 1988년 서울올림픽이 선진국으로 들어서는 관문이었다면, 2002년 월드컵은 전 세계에 우리의 저력과 자신감을 알린 계기였다. 2018 평창올림픽의 성공적인 개최가 국가적인 당면과제이고, 온 국민의 염원이라는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다.

김정은 북한 노동당 위원장이 2018년 신년사를 통해 북한의 평창올림픽 참가를 언급했다. 북한 선수단과 미녀 공연단의 참가란 핫이슈로 평창올림픽의 열기가 후끈 달아올랐다. 이어진 남북 고위급회담은 북핵으로 인한 위기의 한반도에 ‘평화’라는 봄기운이 넘치고 있다.

1936 베를린올림픽에 대해 살펴보자. 베를린올림픽은 올림픽 측면에서 볼 때 대단히 성공적인 대회였다. 지금은 당연시 여겨지는 ‘올림픽 성화 봉송 릴레이(Olympic Torch Relays)’를 세계 최초로 구상하고 실천하였고, 올림픽 경기를 세계 최초로 32개 국가에 TV 송출을 한 것이다. 또한 올림픽 대회에서 독일이 2위 미국을 월등하게 제치고 아리아인의 우수성을 세계에 널리 알린 것은 덤이었다.

대회 이전에 베를린올림픽에 대한 세계적인 비판여론이 일었었다. 그 해 3월 독일은 비무장지대인 라인란트에 군대를 진주시켜 유럽에 전운이 감돌게 만들었기 때문이다. 더구나 당시 히틀러와 나치는 유대인들을 무자비하게 탄압하는 반인륜적인 만행을 저지르고 있었다. 당연히 베를린올림픽의 보이콧 운동이 있었지만 정치와 스포츠를 분리하자는 평화주의자의 주장이 힘을 얻어 미국은 최대선수단을 파견하였다.

1936년 ‘라인란트 진주’와 ‘베를린올림픽 성공’이 결과적으로 3년 뒤 벌어진 제2차 세계대전의 결정적 계기가 되었다. 당시만 해도 독일군은 막강한 프랑스 육군과 영국 해군과 맞서 싸울만한 힘이 없었다. 더구나 희대의 독재자 아돌프 히틀러 총통은 독일 군부에 대한 완전한 장악력도 없는 상황이었다. 독일 군부가 반대한 라인란트 진주의 성공은 그에게 힘을 실어주었고, 이후 군비를 급격하게 증강시켜 결국 인류 역사상 최대의 전쟁이 발발했다. 1936년 독일 육군의 두 배에 달하는 군사력을 가지고도 전쟁의 공포를 극복하지 못한 프랑스는 결국 1940년 독일군의 군화에 짓밟혔다.

라인란트 진주가 프랑스 마지노선을 무너뜨린 물리적인 힘이었다면, 베를린올림픽은 히틀러 세계 정복의 정신적인 지주역할을 했다. 심지어 올림픽 기간 중에 유대인 탄압을 일시적으로 중지해 마치 히틀러가 평화주의자인 것처럼 믿게 만들었다. 만약 미국과 영국 그리고 프랑스가 베를린올림픽에 불참했다면 전혀 다른 세계사가 쓰여 졌을 지도 모른다. 전 세계에 거짓 평화 메시지를 보낸 히틀러는 군비를 확충하는 결정적인 3년이란 ‘시간’을 벌었다.

사상 최대의 대북제재에도 꿈쩍하지 않던 김정은이 왜 평창올림픽에 평화의 제스처를 보냈을까? 김정은만 콕 집어 제거하는 참수작전과 북핵 시설에 대한 대규모 선제타격의 공포는 그의 가장 커다란 걱정거리일 것이다. 김정은이 평창올림픽 참가와 남북대화를 통한 평화 제스처를 하는 목적은 참수작전과 북한 폭격의 명분을 제거하는 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해 북한이 고도의 핵무장을 할 충분한 시간을 벌고자한다는 것은 삼척동자도 아는 사실이다.

히틀러가 왼손에는 평화를 오른손에는 전차로 전 세계를 기망하였다. 3대에 걸친 북한 김 씨 왕조도 한손에는 남북대화, 다른 손에는 핵개발로 우리를 속여 왔다. 미 중앙정보국(CIA)은 북핵 능력 완성 시한을 3개월로 예측하고 있다. 북한이 미국의 재래식 혹은 핵공격을 받은 뒤에도 핵무기로 워싱턴을 반격할 수 있는 능력, 즉 ‘2차 보복능력’을 갖추는 것은 이제 시간문제일 뿐이다.

우리는 평창올림픽의 성공적 개최와 북핵 해체 중 어느 것이 더 중요한지 심각하게 고민해야할 것이다. 시간은 북한 편이기 때문이다. 김정은의 핵시계는 25시를 향해 급격하게 가고 있다.

Berlin Olympics and PyeongChang Olympics

The PyeongChang Winter Olympic is less than a month away. If the Seoul Olympic in 1988 was the gateway for Korea to become one of the advanced countries, the 2002 World Cup was an opportunity to show our strength and confidence to the whole world. There is no doubt that hosting the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic successfully is a national priority and desired by the Korean people.

The North Korean Worker’s Party Chairman, Kim Jong-un, mentioned the possibility of North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Olympics in his 2018 New Year's Day address to the country. The excitement for the PyeongChang Olympics was further animated by the thought of the participation of the North Korean athletes and their beauty troupe. The resulting high-level inter-Korean talks are full of spring energy in the name of "peace" on the Korean peninsula in the midst of a crisis caused by North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

Let's take a look at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The Berlin Olympics was a very successful event in terms of the Olympics. It was the first Olympic 　　　　where the Olympic Torch Relay, which is taken for granted today, was planned and implemented and the Olympic sports games were broadcasted in 32 countries. It was also an event 　　　　where Germany outpaced second place the United States by a wide margin and demonstrated Aryan’s excellence to the world.

Before the event, there was a much criticism against the Berlin Olympics. In March of the year the sports event took place, Germany militarized its armed forces in the demilitarized zone of Rhineland, escalating tension in Europe. Moreover, Hitler and the Nazis were engaging in anti-humanitarian activities by brutally suppressing the Jews. Inevitably there were boycott movements against the Berlin Olympics, but the pacifist movement appealing to separate politics and sports prevailed and the United States eventually sent out its largest number of Olympic athletes to the event in Berlin.

The 'Remilitarizing of Rhineland' and 'Berlin Olympic success' in 1936 became the decisive events triggering World War II three years later. At that time, the Germans had no power to fight the formidable French Army and the British Navy. Moreover, the infamous dictator, Adolf Hitler, did not have complete control over the German military. Success in remilitarizing Rhineland, which was opposed by the German military authorities, gave him power. After this event, the German forces increased its armaments rapidly, eventually leading to the breakout of the greatest war in human history. France, which had an Army twice the size of Germany’s in 1936, was unable to overcome the fear of war and eventually was trampled down by the German armed forces in 1940.

If the Remilitarization of Rhineland was the physical force that crumbled the French Maginot Line, the Berlin Olympic played the spiritual role of Hitler's world conquest. Temporarily stopping the oppression against the Jews during the Olympics made the world believe Hitler was a pacifist. If the United States, Great Britain, and France boycotted the Berlin Olympics, world history might have been written differently. Hitler, who sent out a false peace message to the world, earned three precious years and that was sufficient 'time' to expand armaments.

Why did Kim Jung-un, who won’t even budge when hit by unprecedented and impactful sanctions against North Korea, show a gesture of peace to the PyeongChang Olympic? Kim Jung-un’s biggest fears are being assassinated and large-scale preemptive strike on the North Korean nuclear facilities. The purpose of North Korea’s proposal to participate in the PyeongChang Olympics and Kim’s peace gesture through inter-Korean dialogue is to remove the cause of his assassination and the bombing of North Korea. Even a schoolboy would know that North Korea intends to earn time to develop its advanced nuclear arsenal.

Hitler deceived the world suggesting peace with his left hand and hiding war tanks on his right. The Kim dynasty for three generations deceived South Korea as well. On one hand, they offered inter-Korean dialogue while on the other they developed nuclear weapons. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) predicts that North Korea’s nuclear capability will be completed in three months. It is now only a matter of time before North Korea has the ability to counterattack Washington with nuclear weapons, or "second retaliatory capabilities," even after it has been subjected to US conventional or nuclear attacks.

We must seriously weigh and compare the importance of hosting of the PyeongChang Olympic successfully and dismantling the North Korean nuclear program. Time is on North Korea’s side and Kim Jung-un’s nuclear clock is rapidly reaching the 25th hour.
